The iPhone is now old hat. Before we've seen it here officially too. It never fails. The Apple hype machine is so powerful, that the whole gadget world is abuzz with talks of the impossibly thin MacBook Air. It may even be a while before we see it here, especially considering that Apple's computer products have a far lower penetration as compared to the ubiquitous PC. I can almost visualize a parody of Apple's famous 'I'm a Mac' ads with just one Mac and several PCs dressed in Indian clothes.
In a way, the MacBook Air is a lot like the Tata Nano. With the Nano, the Tata boffins were given the end price, and they knew that the car had to stick to that, no matter what components were used. With the MacBook Air, the design had to be the thinnest notebook on the planet, no matter what they omitted to make it so. So while the base version of the Nano does without air conditioning, painted bumpers and has a small, two-cylinder engine, the Air is crippled with the lack of an optical drive, the lack of wired ethernet, a non user replaceable battery, only one USB port, a maximum 80 GB hard drive and has its RAM soldered onto the motherboard.
So they have their faults. Either way, both the Nano and the Air have got all the publicity they'll ever need. They'll sell. And by sell, I mean sell really well. Sell like there's no competition and no tomorrow. Could this be the start of something new? With every manufacturer of every product trying to flip the market on its head, could it be a good thing or bad? You decide!
