NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Department of Telecom (DoT) is open to the idea of considering Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in India.
Speaking to the media Siddhartha Behura, secretary DoT said that the government is open to the idea of MVNOs.
This decision comes in wake of the GSM operators' objection to the Tata-Virgin deal launched in Mumbai last Sunday.
"We will consider it once the policy on MVNO is announced. However, currently there are no policy on it," he said.
Commenting on the telecom market in India, Behura said that the market is maturing and 'the government may look at this option.'
Asked about the Tata-Virgin deal, he said that the government has sought details of the tie-up but has not barred the operator from rolling out services.
"We have asked them to submit the information on the tie-up to check if the requirements of the licensing norms are met," Behura said.
Regarding the spectrum allocation, he said that the time for allocation has not yet been decided.
"We have adequate spectrum for some of the circles and the allocation date has not yet be finalized," he added.
However, he refused to comment on the release of spectrum from the defence.
He said that the government is likely to come up with a policy on merger and acquisition in the telecom space, based on the Telecom regulators recommendations.
