Opera Drops Yahoo for Google

Opera is dropping Yahoo and substituting Google (News - Alert) as its default search engine. Opera is popular in the mobile space, which both Yahoo and Google will be the next big search battleground. On the other hand, T-Mobile (News - Alert) is dropping Google in favor of Yahoo as the default search engine for mobile customers in 11 European countries. The moves are viewed as important not because they confer "walled garden" protection for the preferred engine, but simply because many users just stick with the default search engine that comes installed as part of a device's top decks.

Every month, Opera Mini users browse more than 1.7 billion pages, with much of that traffic generated through the search function in the browser, the company says. More than 35 million cumulative users have downloaded Opera Mini, displaying pages just as they look when using a desktop browser.
