On Friday, Paramount Pictures, an arm of Viacom Inc. announced that its final array of HD DVD titles was on its way on Tuesday, 4th March.

The last two movies that Paramount will release in the HD DVD format are “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Into the Wild”.

On the other hand, the studio is apparently canning the releases of Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd”, “There Will Be Blood” and perhaps the “Bee Movie” too.

Apart from Paramount, big names like Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co., Universal and News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox have already joined the Blu-ray bandwagon.

The popular Warner Bros. Entertainment has also zeroed on the Blu-ray standard as the exclusive format for its releases.

A few days ago, Toshiba followed byMicrosoft surrendered to Sony’s Blu-ray format.

Last August, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animations announced that they would be dropping the Blu-ray format to exclusively back HD DVD formats. However things have now turned around and Paramount is going the other way. That simply left us with one question – What does DreamWorks plan to do, especially keeping its exclusive tie-up with Toshiba, in mind?

Speaking about it, DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg said, “We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through.”

Coming back to the cancelled three movies, though it may be a little upsetting that they have been dropped for the time being, the good news is that Paramount may be soon releasing them in the Blu-ray format. Currently Paramount is working on the release schedule of its Blu-ray content.
